You think of marble structures and Taj Mahal springs to mind. Justifiably so, the grandeur and the magnificence of the architecture compares to no other. But what if I tell there exists another marble wonder tucked away in the heart of India i.e. Madhya Pradesh. Yes I am talking about the Marble Rocks at Bhedaghat. And it’s apparent from the name the architect here is Mother Nature of course!
Located about 23km from the city of Jabalpur these rocks are a spectacular sight to the eye. And I just had the chance of visiting them recently. The shear limestone rocks rise up to hundred feet towering on both sides with the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh, Narmada, flowing between them. The peaks glittering in the sunlight and the shadows across the placid waters of the river, reminds us that how beautiful nature and its creation are. The serene calmness and the stunning creations are a setting perfect for a poet’s inspiration.
Boat ride, a calming experience: The suitable way to explore these rocks would be the small rickety boats lined up near the ghat or jetty. These boats seat up to 20 people per ferry and the charge for the same is Rs.100 for the longer ride and Rs.50 for the shorter one. They also have a facility for a six seater private boat which costs up to Rs.1000. Since there are plenty of boats available there is hardly any queue and the wait is bare minimal. Insist on life jacket when you take a ride.
The duration of the ride is around 45 minutes with two rowers and one steerer. One of the rower also teams up as a guide. Most of the monologue is primarily in the Hindi. But what makes it interesting is the lyrical and comical way in which it is narrated. Some of the jokes do manage to get you in fit of giggles.
Enjoy various shades and shapes of marble rocks: There are different shades of marbles present here. From pink, sky blue to even black. These shades are of course much lesser in proportion. The shades of white also keep varying, however there are a couple of concentrations of much whiter marbles.
As you make your way along the river through the narrow gorges of the rocks the guide points out to certain structures and tries to associate them to figurines of a broken car, the trinity of Vishnu, Brahma and Mahesh and even two school boys fighting. Mind you these are not actual carvings rather minor representations created by nature to the rocks over the passage of time.
A Bollywood shooting destination: So a pocketful of imagination and a mind open to ideas should help you visualize. Many Bollywood movies have also been shot here, the guide reminds you constantly. From Rekha to Pran, all Bollywood stars have come here. With the most recent being superstar Hrithik Roshan, the guide adds with a flourish.
If you have heard the saying, ‘Still waters run deep’, well it certainly true here. The Narmada runs 100s of feet deep here, the guides mention. These figures give you an eerie feeling of how big the expanse of the nature is.
